The Worcester Wolves achieved a comprehensive 97-79 victory over the Mersey Tigers on Friday night in Merseyside to trail the BBL Championship leaders Newcastle.
The win improves their point’s difference and moves them just two points behind the leaders with Leicester and Glasgow.
Tommy Freeman once again had an impressive night leading all scorers with 27 points and just one rebound shy of a double double.
More notably, Mersey’s new signing Marlon Capers had a stellar debut performance, leading his new team with 21 points after a remarkable scoring effort.
In the early exchanges, the game was quite close. Freeman gave the visitors a slight lead early on with an excellent shot from the 3-point line but they were soon pegged back. Great work from Myles Hesson and Kris Douse kept the hosts within reach as Douse scored to trail by two at 12-10.
The Wolves were not in sight for long, as a late burst of scoring from Ritchie Gordon gave the visitors a six point advantage. The Wolves led by 21-15 at the end of the first ten minutes.
In the second quarter, the Wolves stretched their lead to nine points in what would turn out to be a three point shooting contest. David Watts hit a triple for the Wolves to lead at 30-21. The Tigers proved they had the range, replying with two 3-point daggers to trim the lead to three.
It was then Sherrad Prezzie Blue’s turn to show the opposition what he has got in his arsenal as his 3 pointer gave them a halftime lead of 37-28.
The visitors opened up the game in the second half with a 21-3 surge that included 11 points from Freeman to go into the final period at 64-47.
Watts, who finished the night with 21 points for the night, continued to cause damage from the 3-point line as the Wolves ran out comfortable winners.
