Fifth title in sight for Eagles

A fifth BBL Championship title looks well on course for Newcastle Eagles after a weekend which saw them go eight points clear at the top.

A fifth BBL Championship title looks well on course for Newcastle Eagles after a weekend which saw them go eight points clear at the top.

Fab Flournoy’s men saw off title rivals Plymouth Raiders 103-94 on Friday night, and the Raiders’ woe was compounded when they went down to Guildford on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Eagles were defeating Cheshire Jets 95-82 to make it 18 wins from 19 league matches so far.

Flournoy said: “We are obviously delighted with two wins. Plymouth was a play-off level game with two teams basically going at each other the whole game. We kept our poise down the stretch and really closed the game out well in overtime.

“Against Cheshire we started out red hot from outside and played excellent defence for three quarters to really put the game away. Thommo [Andrew Thomson] showed why he really should be inline for an invite to the GB camp this summer by knocking down his first seven threes and we all fed off that.”
