Cheshire Jets will continue in the BBL after local businessman Haydn Cook took over the franchise.
Cook will immediately take control of the Jets after they announced in July that the franchise was looking for new owners.
Had Cook not taken control of the franchise, the Jets’ future in the BBL was in doubt following Peter Hawkins’ decision to end his involvement with the franchise.
However in a statement Cook attempted to rally up support from local businesses and the community, stressing that the hard work to keep the Jets in the BBL had only just begun.
Cook said: “I am honoured to be entrusted with leading the Cheshire Jets, as a long term local resident I took my now grown up children to games at Northgate many years ago and am a long term supporter.
“When it became clear that Peter (Hawkins) was stepping down after five years I felt it was important for the region that the Jets continued in the BBL and felt that I had skills and experiences which could take the team forward.
“I don’t underestimate the challenges ahead, both in the short term in preparation for our first game on 23rd September and for the long term, but I know with the continued support of the best volunteers and fans in the league we can make it a success.”
Hawkins was delighted Cook had stepped in to replace him as owner, and said that he was the best man for the job.
Hawkins said: “Any organisation needs someone to be accountable for leading it, in the case of The Jets, Haydn has my utmost respect in being willing to do that and I know everyone will get behind him to ensure it is a success.
“The Jets are a huge asset in the region and I am confident Haydn can take the BBL team onto the next level.”
This is not the first time the Jets’ future in British basketball’s elite has been in doubt. In 2007 former owner Mike Burton announced his retirement before the franchise picked up a significant sponsorship from BIG Storage.
