Aliu Column: Proud to be Tigers all-time top scorer

Friday night was special one for me as I became the Mersey Tigers’ all-time leading points scorer in the BBL.

Friday night was special one for me as I became the Mersey Tigers’ all-time leading points scorer in the BBL.

It’s a personal achievement that I’m proud of and to do it at home in this great city of Liverpool means a lot. I never thought growing up that Liverpool would ever have a pro team, so the fact that we now do and that I’m able to be a part of it is special to me.

I never really set myself personal point targets throughout the season, my philosophy has always been the same regardless of where I play, and that is to just do whatever it takes to win.

Friday’s game was incredible. Cheshire, being our derby rivals, always come out hard, but to pick up the win was a big step forward for us as a team. We were able to dig deep in the second half and take it to overtime and then pull out a win.

Our season up until that point has been playing great in the first half and then unravel in the second. Against the Jets, we managed to bring it all together and I’m proud of all the guys for digging deep.

The crowd was amazing and it helped us push through the last few crucial minutes.

I played the full 45 minutes on Friday and then backed up again on Saturday at Worcester. We had a few injuries with Marlin (Capers) and Matt (Otten) missing for that game, so I’ve had to play a lot more minutes. It is tough, but if that’s what’s needed, then I will always rise to the challenge.

It’s the third time we’ve lost to Worcester now this season, and they are a very tough and talented team to play against. They play very well together with a good coach, and they look forward now to their BBL Cup semi-final against Plymouth this weekend. I’ve not seen Plymouth play yet, but Gavin (Love) has a lot of talent down there. I think the semi-final tie will be very close, and it could go either way!
